Lyophilized liquid in vials of 15 and 30 mg: folic acid, citric acid, glutathione, mannitol, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, sodium hydroxide. A bottle of water for solution: water for preparing solution for injections.
Indications for use:
It is used as part of the Milan Cocktail, as the strongest catalyst and supplier of folic acid.
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Recommendations for use:
The drug is administered slowly in the case of intravenous administration.
Dosage, both for oral and intramuscular or intravenous use of the drug can reach the amount of 15 mg per day, every other day as prescribed by a doctor. The administration should be carried out before complete remission and elimination of folic acid deficiency, as well as restoration of the body’s internal resources. In exceptional cases, or when using Prefolic as an antidote to cytotoxic anti-follic drugs (for example, in the case of the use of metrotrexate in higher doses), an increased dosage may be prescribed.
It should be taken several hours later: 15 mg per pill every 6-8 hours, or 50 - 100 mg intravenously every 3-8 hours for several days, depending on the need for emergency care. Gastro-resistant tablets, i.e. active ingredients are released in the intestine; pills are not chewable, but are swallowed whole, optimal intake in the morning.
Precautions for use:
In the presence of pernicious anemia (Addison-Birner’s disease), it is advisable to take vitamin B12 along with Prefolic to prevent neurological complications in the body. In the case of the use of the drug Prefolic in a solution for the slow injection through an IV, it is necessary to avoid prolonged exposure to air oxygen and the simultaneous use of bicarbonates. In patients with epilepsy, anticonvulsant drugs can provoke a decrease in the synthesis of megablasts (megablastic anemia), the use of Prefolic to balance this effect may lead to an increase in seizures.
